CORPUS LINGUISTICS: WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT WORKS

Corpus Linguistics: What It is and How It Works was written to provide students, teachers, and beginning researchers with a clear and practical into the world of corpus-based inquiry. While the field of linguistics has developed rapidly over the past decades, many learners in Indonesia still encounter it for the first time without structured guidance or accessible learning materials. This book aims to fill that gap by offering a comprehensive but student-friendly introduction to what corpora are, how they work, and how they can be used for linguistic research and English language teaching. The units in this book were designed with the needs of postgraduate students in mind, though undergraduate learners and teachers will also find them valuable. Each unit introduces foundational concepts, demonstrates analytical procedures using widely accessible tools, and connects corpus findings to practical applications in ELT. Numerous examples are drawn from both existing corpora and self-compiled datasets to show how corpus linguistics works in real research contexts. I sincerely hope that this book will support readers in developing strong, evidence-based thinking about language: an approach that is increasingly essential in linguistic research and pedagogical innovation.
